Completed Mask

I often like to talk about commissions once I have finished them, what went well, what did not, things that I learned. This was more like a collaboration, I feel, and that was nice. Her input led me to make a better design than I might have were I just making this as an example/show piece.

First off, she chose three colors of wire. I usually do two. In this case, it meant the connections between the larger pieces were more subtle and allowed the details where I “wove” the wire to show much more. Second is that itself, I actually did some wire weaving on this piece. While I have done some in the past and am capable, it tends to be something I find tedious and don’t generally choose to do. Third is the detailing on one of the “corners.” During the initial design process I had re-sketched that spot at least four times. Finally deciding it was “good enough” I sent her a draft and she immediately picked that spot out. The next draft was finalized and the design is much stronger for it.

Overall, it’s a gorgeous piece of work and I look forward to doing the finally fitting on her face, whenever that happens. Busy people sometimes have problems getting together!
