Tool Thursday: Diamond Hole Chisel Set

And here we are, 8 at night, writing a Thursday blog post for Thursday after writing a Monday post ahead of time about the importance of planning ahead. The irony is not lost on me… and that’s a terrible segue, but speaking of iron, the chisel set.

With 10 heads- a single point, and 3 sets of 3 widths- and a handle, you’re pretty much set for punching holes into projects. I don’t see going through more than 8oz of leather with these, but I’m not sure how the Pro line compares to the Craftool, and can’t see doing that by hand with an awl, so that seems fine. Also, I can’t imagine what you would be stitching together for something that thick… but may I suggest a rotary tool and a diamond bit if you must?

Moving on, I hate myself a little bit for ever deciding an awl had been the ONE TWUE WAY as the project that I just took these out on went so much faster I could have finished two of them in the time I had set aside. Live and learn.

To be fair, I didn’t necessarily have the resources to go and purchase one at full price and managed to snag one of the extra special Black Friday ones at one of my local shops. I don’t do a lot of stitching, so it wasn’t a necessary purchase for me, but if you do… do yourself a favor.

It is on sale this month (though not as inexpensive as Black Friday) so if you’re looking to add a useful tool that will help in your work, this could be a serious contender. Then again, if you do a TON of hand-stitching through thicker items and tend to work with one width- pick up a “fine” version of that. I like the interchangeable heads, but we all know that adds a level of weakness versus one, solid built tool.

See you Monday! And check out the project I made with it on Instagram, if you haven’t already. I made a nice Steampunk cuff embellished with lace.
