Tool Thursday: Gutermann Sewing Thread Box

Pictured: My thread box, with all but one of the spools of thread nicely in it.

As I was gifted this box, I cannot necessarily speak to the pricing, but I’m happy to talk about my experiences so far with the contents. It is advertised as “Sew-all thread,” being 100% polyester (I wouldn’t necessarily suggest sewing silk with polyester, but pretty much everything else), 26 spools with 100m on each.

I have found it to be nice, tough thread that doesn’t schlubb when it is being pulled through the machine or break frequently like some unnamed spools left to me by relatives. The dye/color is consistent throughout the spool and I would assume they line up well from spool to spool.

100m is a good amount to finish some projects and at least color test for larger pieces, so could be a good value if you’re planning a variety of smaller projects that you want good, tough thread for, and in a myriad of colors. The colors are as follows (at least in my box). Gutermann only uses a number, so I have somewhat arbitrarily named them. It may or may not be useful to others reading this review. =)

10 – true black; 20 – pure white; 30 – antique white; 102 – cool light gray; 238 – Prussian blue; 251 – royal blue; 280 – deep navy blue; 315 – cotton candy pink; 370 – peach; 410 – true red; 440 – wine; 470 – orange; 520 – tan; 566 – reddish brown; 595 – mahogany brown; 596 – black brown; 619 – blue turquoise; 642 – deep teal; 716 – green apple; 752 – true green; 774 – drab olive green; 807 – pale yellow; 855 – golden yellow; 903 – lilac; 925 – lavender; 943 – deep violet

This rainbow color assortment provides a good spread, with two or three spools of each main ROYGBIV section of the color wheel, with a heavy hand on more neutral tones.

The case it comes packaged in is a nice sturdy plastic, but don’t expect it to stay well-sealed once you have removed the stickers from the side. It isn’t meant for travelling, unless you bind it shut yourself. In that case, it would work nicely- each color has a spindle to be placed on inside. Flip it upside down, shake it, things are going to stay in place, much like roller cases of old.

So there you have it, my review of Gutermann Sewing Thread Box. It seems to be item number (or “Art.”) 618667. Amazon has a glut of reviews, but these are my two cents. See you Monday!
