Tool Thursday: Tiny Tutorials

Above: More springtime flowers, this time some of the white violets that grow in my yard. I love them. =)

I know, I know. It’s TOOL Thursday. Well, I didn’t test out any new tools or learn new tricks this week that seemed worth sharing. I suppose you could call these tiny tutorials “tricks” instead. Or you can just deal with the fact it’s my bloggie and I’ll post what I want to.

Moving on, we have two tiny tutorials that are easy, inexpensive, and useful or fun. Neither is necessarily my original idea and have been discussed various places, but I’ll give my spin on them and link to the sources I found that inspired me to do my own version.

First off, it is nearing May and also Summertime fun… for which we have lightsabers. Originally found here, it is the season to find pool noodles at the Dollar Store. I’m attending a Star Wars themed party on the 30th, which is BYOLS (Bring Your Own LightSaber). Since I didn’t have one, I followed the simple tutorial to build my very own for the saber duels hopefully happening (weather permitting).

Pretty straight forward- pool noodle, duct tape, and electrical tape. Cut or don’t cut your noodle to size, tape the bottom or the middle with duct tape to make a “handle” and add details with electrical tape. Lightsabers in five minutes! They can even light up, if you have an appropriately sized flashlight to stuff in the middle.

The second tiny tutorial is just as straight forward, though more time consuming and maybe less fun… I needed “gems” for my Terra Branford cosplay. I do have resin, though I haven’t ever used it before, so I’m still hesitant there. I’ve painted tinfoil and attached it to half marbles before, but didn’t have the proper colors of Sharpie. Searching the Internet for alternatives, I came across the perfect solution for me- paint the backs of the half marbles instead with nail polish!

Watch a video here if you aren’t quite sure how that might work.

I now have lovely “sapphires” and “rubies” to embed on Terra’s pauldrons… once I get that far! It’s been an awesome week for getting things done and I’m getting excited for the convention. I know lots of people in the area are going to one here and I hope they have a blast. It’s prom time at the flower shop, so that’s where I’ll be!
